The number of coronavirus infections has risen significantly in Saxony. In the week from October 6 to 12, 396 Covid-19 cases were registered in the state, according to the weekly report from the State Investigation Institute (LUA). In the previous week, 259 cases had been reported. This means that a good 5,000 cases have been registered in Bavaria so far this year - compared to 10,600 in the previous year as a whole.
The number of coronavirus infections is also currently on the rise again nationwide. In the week from October 6 to 12, around 6,440 laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 cases have so far been reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). In the previous week, around 3,850 cases had been reported.
Viruses mainly in the upper respiratory tract
According to this, the XFG lineage, also known as Stratus, is currently the most widespread. Stratus is a lineage of the Omikron variant. Its viruses multiply primarily in the upper respiratory tract and can therefore spread more quickly. Experts do not believe that XFG poses an increased risk to public health.
In contrast, influenza is not yet playing a major role: 30 cases of influenza were reported in Saxony for the week from October 6 to October 12, compared to 17 the week before. According to the Ministry of Health, it is not possible to predict the course of an influenza season. However, the seasonal flu wave usually occurs after the turn of the year - and then reaches its peak in January or February.
