In Saxony, more and more people are dying from dementia. Between 2014 and 2023, the number of deaths more than doubled - from around 1,600 to more than 3,300, according to the state government's response to a minor question from Left Party MP Susanne Schaper. According to the Scientific Institute of the AOK, almost 3.82% of the population had dementia by 2022 - significantly more than the national average. The disease affects women and people over the age of 85 particularly frequently.
"Those who suffer from dementia gradually lose their memories and abilities, even to the point of needing care," explained Schaper. This is not only very challenging for those affected, but also for their relatives. Dementia is a growing problem and the number of people affected will continue to rise as society ages.
Left sees great need for action
The Left politician called for more prevention and support. "We must ensure that fewer people develop dementia." Sufferers need the best possible treatment and support for their relatives. "There is a great need for action in prevention, diagnosis and treatment," Schaper stated. This is a task for society as a whole.
She cited lack of exercise, substance abuse, an unhealthy diet, high blood pressure, loneliness and depression as important risk factors. "What is needed are free and low-threshold services for early detection, reliable advisory structures, self-help groups, specialized care services and assisted living communities for dementia patients." There also needs to be more qualified staff in hospitals and care homes, continuous further training and better recognition of the services provided by family carers.
Care at the limit: family members need more than thanks
"The majority of care takes place at home, and life in familiar surroundings should be guaranteed for as long as possible," said Schaper. Family caregivers not only need advice, but also relief, for example through more day and short-term care services. Their care services must also be better protected in terms of pensions and income.
