The chairman of the conference of interior ministers, Brandenburg's head of department Michael Stübgen (CDU), expects concrete results from the consultations on the consequences of attacks on election campaigners. "Discussions will be held with the aim of passing resolutions," said ministry spokeswoman Josefin Roggenbuck in Potsdam on Tuesday. The federal and state interior ministers are discussing more protection for elected officials and other politically active people following violent attacks such as that on the Saxon SPD European politician Matthias Ecke. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) and the heads of the federal state ministries will meet in a video conference this evening. Faeser is to provide an overview of the situation.
Ecke, the leading SPD candidate for the European elections in Saxony, was beaten up by four teenagers aged 17 and 18 on Friday when he tried to put up election posters. The Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) believes that at least one of the suspects in the attack belongs to the right-wing spectrum. In recent days, there have also been attacks on politicians from the Greens and the AfD. Politicians from the CDU/CSU and the Greens are calling for concrete agreements from the interior ministers.
