New wolf territories and multiple wolf offspring have been confirmed in Saxony. According to preliminary wolf monitoring figures for the period 2024/25, 6 wolf pairs and 35 wolf packs were detected as of July 10 this year, as announced by the State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology (LfULG) in Dresden. Three new wolf territories were also confirmed. Two of them are located in Tresenwald and Lossatal in the district of Leipzig, another in Muldenhammer in the Vogtland district.
Residents discover wolf pups in Lossatal
The pack in Lossatal first came to light last month after a helpless wolf pup was found there. Local residents had picked up the apparently lost cub on the outskirts of the municipality. The results of the samples sent in provided the information that the pup could not be assigned to any previously known parent, as the LfULG announced. It had since been released. With the help of a wildlife camera, the researchers were then able to observe the parent pair and two other pups.
There were also offspring in two wolf pairs in Liebschützberg in the district of North Saxony and in Marienberg in the Erzgebirgskreis, meaning that there is now a pack in each of these areas.
Wolf monitoring since 2001
According to preliminary figures, there are now a total of 41 confirmed wolf territories in Saxony. The majority of these are still located in Upper Lusatia. So far, 28 territories have been confirmed here. These include one pair of wolves and 27 wolf packs, according to the report.
According to the LfULG, the evaluation of the data for other areas has not yet been completed. The final results are to be published in fall 2025. Wolf monitoring has been taking place in Saxony since 2001 in order to monitor the size and development of the wolf population. It is based on collected genetic samples and photo trap images.
