Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer has opened the Agra agricultural trade fair in Leipzig with a clear commitment to agriculture. "Agriculture is the economic heart of our rural areas," said the CDU politician and patron at the start of the four-day exhibition.
The trade fair is regarded as one of the most important meeting places for the industry in eastern Germany. Technology, animals and developments in agriculture will be presented at the Leipzig exhibition grounds until Sunday.
Kretschmer emphasized the importance of farms for supply and the regional economy. "Between tradition and high-tech, our farms and their many employees not only secure food sovereignty, but also ensure regional value creation," he said.
At the same time, the head of government positioned himself in the debate on future EU agricultural funding. This should "not be at the expense of eastern German agriculture". The sector in the east is characterized by larger farms and cooperative structures, which are disadvantaged in previous EU plans.
Agricultural policy issues will also be discussed at the trade fair alongside agricultural technology and animal husbandry. Among others, EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen is expected to speak at a public forum on the future of European agricultural policy.
