The network operator is investing large sums to meet the increasing demand. One major project concerns Leipzig/Halle Airport.

The grid operator Mitnetz is planning to invest 531 million euros this year. The funds will be used for the renewal of outdated equipment, expansion, maintenance and expansion of facilities, as Mitnetz CEO Lutz Eckenroth explained. 252 million euros will flow into projects in Saxony, 140 million euros in Saxony-Anhalt, 119 million euros in Brandenburg and 20 million euros in Thuringia.

Major projects include the replacement construction of the Ragow substation (total costs: 23 million euros, of which 9.1 million this year) and the construction of a new substation in Schkeuditz/West for Leipzig/Halle Airport (total costs: 13.8 million euros, of which 6.9 million this year). A new high-voltage line between Herlasgrün and Markneukirchen will contribute to the distribution of electricity from renewable energies in future (total costs: 20.5 million euros, of which 6.1 million this year).

With the expansion, the operator wants to meet the increasing demand from industry, commerce, data centers and large storage facilities. Although there is still room for additional load customers, it is sold out in places, said Kai Richter, Commercial Director.
