Leipzig stands out: More people have had their gender entry changed here than in Dresden and Chemnitz combined. In most cases, this involves a change from female to male.

In Saxony, 2,884 people have had their gender entry changed since the Self-Determination Act came into force. This is according to an answer from the Saxon Ministry of the Interior to a minor question from AfD MP Doreen Schwietzer (Drs. 8/6289). According to the information, the most changes were made in Leipzig: with 1,161 changes, more people made use of the option in the trade fair city than in Dresden (525) and Chemnitz (227) combined. The "Sächsische Zeitung" had previously reported this.

The most common change was from female to male at around 38 percent. In just under 24 percent of cases, the change was from male to female. The remaining changes were in other categories, such as changes to or from "not specified". The districts of Görlitz and Central Saxony did not provide any detailed information on the type of change - however, the total number of changes in these two districts is significantly lower than in Saxony's major cities.

331 applications concerned minors

307 of the applicants were between 14 and 17 years old. At least 24 other cases involved children under the age of 14 - the actual number is likely to be higher, as Chemnitz, Leipzig and the Vogtland district do not record this age group separately.

The Self-Determination Act, which came into force in November 2024, replaced the former Transsexuals Act. It made it much easier to change the gender entry and first name and is now possible with a simple declaration at the registry office. Previously, complex expert opinions were required. For minors under the age of 14, parents must make the declaration. From the age of 14, young people can do this themselves. If the parents object, the approval of a family court is required. The Saxon district courts are not aware of any such cases to date, according to the ministry's response.
