Because of an outbreak of avian influenza, around 80,000 laying hens have to be killed at a poultry farm in Ebersbach in the district of Meißen. "Unfortunately, avian influenza has now reached a second large poultry flock in Saxony. The consequences are serious. The necessary and legally required measures were initiated immediately," announced the responsible Minister of Social Affairs Petra Köpping (SPD). The first case of bird flu in turkeys had also occurred in Ebersbach in November. At that time, 8,000 animals were killed as a precautionary measure. According to the ministry, 28 wild birds in Saxony - including cranes, geese and swans - have also been found to be infected. Following a case of bird flu in a pelican, Leipzig Zoo had 350 more birds tested - and has since given the all-clear. Köpping called on all poultry farmers in Saxony to exercise caution. "Only together can we prevent the animal disease from spreading further on a large scale. I once again urgently recommend that all poultry farmers in Saxony keep their animals indoors," emphasized the Minister.
