Saxony's fruit growers are looking back on a good strawberry harvest so far. Despite a brief period of frost, both quantity and quality are good—and prices remain stable.

Fruit growers in Saxony are satisfied with the strawberry harvest so far. “We will likely match last year’s yield of about 1,400 tons,” said Jörg Geitel, chairman of the Fruit Growers’ Association of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, in response to an inquiry.

The frosty nights at the end of April led to only minor losses in eastern Saxony. “After that, the weather was good for the strawberries: no long periods of rain and no extreme heat or drought,” Geitel explained. As a result, the quality and taste are excellent.

Prices for strawberries are thus roughly in line with those of the previous year. At farms selling directly to consumers, a pound costs between 4.50 euros and 6.50 euros, as the association head explained.
