Four years behind schedule: the expansion of parts of the Berlin-Dresden line has been significantly delayed. According to the transport company, a moorland area also plays a role.

The expansion of the Berlin-Dresden railroad line is expected to be delayed by around four years. Originally, all sections of the second construction phase from Blankenfelde in Brandenburg to Großenhain in Saxony were due to go into operation in 2029, as announced by Deutsche Bahn. Missing sections of the line extension are now not expected to go online until the end of 2033. Commuters will therefore have to wait longer for the planned reduction in travel time between Berlin and Dresden.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the reason for the postponement of construction work are requirements in the planning approval process. These include environmental issues such as encroachment on the moorland near Zossen. This relates to the section of track from Blankenfelde to Wünsdorf-Waldstadt near Zossen in the Teltow-Fläming district.

Planning documents are being revised

The planning documents for the three sections in total on the northern section of the Berlin-Dresden railroad line are currently being revised, according to Deutsche Bahn. According to Deutsche Bahn, all of the work is to be completed together at a later date in one continuous closure of the line. This would spare passengers additional closures.

Rail: Zossen station conversion remains on schedule

The conversion of Zossen station, on the other hand, should be completed by the end of 2027 as planned. The company has also announced that it is looking into bringing forward some construction measures on the line, such as the conversion of Elsterwerda station in the Elbe-Elster district of Brandenburg.

On the route from Berlin to Dresden, Deutsche Bahn plans to upgrade 125 kilometers for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. This should shorten the journey time.
