On St. Martin's Day, many households serve roast goose for dinner. What prices can consumers expect this year?

Anyone who wants to celebrate St. Martin’s Day with roast goose won’t have to dig much deeper into their pockets this year. Prices for German geese will remain relatively stable, according to the Saxon Poultry Industry Association, which provided this information upon request. Producers therefore expect a maximum price increase of five percent due to higher minimum wages.

Last year, the association estimated the price of a fresh goose produced in Germany at about 20 euros per kilogram. Frozen goods from Germany should therefore cost around 15 euros per kilogram.

Breeder also cites feed prices as a reason for the increase

Breeder Lorenz Eskildsen also expects a price increase similar to that forecast by the association. He cited higher costs for feed and minimum wages as the reason. Eskildsen slaughters around 30,000 animals each year for sale in his own farm stores and at small regional businesses.

Goose season traditionally begins on November 1. Ten days later, on November 11, is St. Martin’s Day. In many households, the first roast goose of the year is served on that day. Christmas is considered the second important sales period for producers.
