Following the riots at the match between Dynamo Dresden and Hertha BSC, the "Unsere Kurve" association is calling for a differentiated view of fan culture. Saxony's Minister of the Interior is being criticized.

The fan association "Unsere Kurve" has condemned the riots at the second division match between Dynamo Dresden and Hertha BSC and at the same time warned against generalization. "Pyrotechnics are a stylistic device and must not be used as a weapon against others. Violence is also not to be tolerated in the stadium. But it is also unacceptable for the behaviour of a few to be used as a yardstick for 25 million soccer fans in stadiums," it said in a statement.

The fan organization criticized Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU). He had said that the incidents in Dresden were symbolic of "violent folklore" in German soccer stadiums and called into question the entire negotiation process with the German Football Association (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL) to date.

Fan association: Individual images are exaggerated

"Mr. Schuster's classification follows a familiar pattern: individual, particularly striking images are singled out and then exaggerated to form a general assessment of fan culture in German soccer. However, this does not do justice to reality," explained "Unsere Kurve".

At the match between Dynamo and Berlin Hertha on Saturday evening, pyrotechnics were initially set off by both fan camps in Dresden's Rudolf Harbig Stadium. Dresden supporters, wearing masks, ran along the pitch to the Hertha fan block and stole a guest flag. Pyrotechnics were shot back and forth. The match was interrupted twice. Police officers on the pitch tried to get the incident under control.

"Envied abroad" for atmosphere before riots

Before the riots, the match had "advertised German soccer and its fan culture", according to the statement from "Unsere Kurve". "A full stadium, sensational choreography on both sides, exemplary use of pyrotechnics without any damage or injuries and an atmosphere that is the envy of German soccer abroad." The incidents are now a matter for the investigating authorities.
