This was unexpected: the German Football League announced the pairing for the opening match just one day before the Bundesliga fixture list was published.

German champions FC Bayern Munich will open the 63rd Bundesliga season with a home match against RB Leipzig. This was announced by the German Football League (DFL) one day before the publication of the complete match schedule. The match will take place on August 22 at 8:30 p.m. and will be broadcast by pay-TV channel Sky and on free-to-air TV by Sat.1. It will be a premiere for Leipzig: the first time they have been involved in an opening match of the Bundesliga.

In the course of Thursday, there will be a "What's the Match" puzzle in which fans will have the opportunity to guess another match from Matchday 1 of the upcoming Bundesliga season.

Starting with the match in Munich, Sky Sport will broadcast all Friday games of the Bundesliga live over the next four years, as the pay-TV channel announced. All but three matches per season will be exclusive. In total, Sky Sport will broadcast 538 of the 617 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matches live - in addition to the Friday evening match, all Saturday Bundesliga matches including the "Top Match of the Week" at 6.30 p.m.
