Until the collapse of the Carola Bridge, the Blue Wonder was Dresden's most famous Elbe crossing. The structure, which is over 100 years old and subject to heavy use, requires special care.

The famous Dresden Elbe bridge Blaues Wunder will be further repaired from July. Preparations for this have begun with the first closures. According to the city administration, components need to be measured and replaced in order to erect the necessary scaffolding. From July 15, the Loschwitz side of the over 100-year-old structure will then be a construction site for almost five years while traffic continues to flow.

The middle section of the bridge was already renovated in 2022/2023, but then the construction work had to be paused due to a legal problem. Now, according to the announcement, the corrosion protection on the northern half can be renewed and many small and medium-sized steel components can be repaired. The Free State of Saxony is funding up to 50 percent of the costs, which the city estimates at around 17.5 million euros.

The listed Blue Wonder has connected the Dresden villages of Blasewitz and Loschwitz since 1893 and is one of the landmarks of Saxony's state capital. Even back then, the steel structure was considered a wonder because it does not have any piers in the river and because of its light blue color. It is being restored to its original shade as part of the ongoing renovation.
