Leipzig will present its plans for an Olympic bid in 2040 together with Berlin on May 27. Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung announced this official date during the debate in Leipzig City Council, according to the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper.
The discussion focused on the conversion of the Red Bull Arena stadium forecourt. The committee discussed the framework plan for the area around the stadium. A ball sports hall with 5,000 seats is to be built there. The existing Quarterback-Immobilien-Arena, home to the Bundesliga handball club SC DHfK Leipzig, is to be expanded to 12,000 seats. The construction of a parking garage and other infrastructure improvements are also planned. The framework plan was approved.
"We want to make Leipzig fit for major sporting events - this explicitly includes an Olympic bid. To do this, we need an infrastructure that thinks about tomorrow today," said SPD city councillor Christina März, according to the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper.
