After two and a half years of construction, a new youth hostel on Lake Markkleeberg near Leipzig is opening its doors to visitors. The 170-bed facility is intended to give guests a closer look at the former mining region, explained Susan Graf, chairwoman of the Saxony State Association of Youth Hostels. The construction was funded by money allocated for the coal phase-out. The opening comes at a time when youth hostels across Germany are feeling the effects of travelers cutting back on travel expenses.
According to the city of Markkleeberg, the investment costs totaled approximately 17 million euros. Of that amount, 15.9 million euros came from funds under the Coal Regions Investment Act and from the Free State of Saxony. The Youth Hostel Association is leasing the property on a long-term basis and operates the facility. It is located directly on Lake Markkleeberg, a flooded open-pit mine pit.
