Analysis of this year’s Forest Condition Survey results is still underway. However, the effects of the drought can already be assessed.

According to an assessment by Sachsenforst, this year’s low precipitation will once again have a negative impact on Saxony’s trees. Precipitation levels so far this year have been lower than last year’s and significantly below the average for the reference period from 1991 to 2020, the state forestry administration reported in response to an inquiry. This was confirmed by measurements taken at forest climate stations.

Every summer, experts examine approximately 6,800 tree crowns for discoloration and loss of needles and leaves. The results of the forest condition survey are currently being evaluated—the negative effects on tree vitality can already be estimated, the agency added. The results will be presented in December in the Forest Condition Report.

Damage from bark beetles is minimal

As far as bark beetles are concerned, Sachsenforst continues to assess the situation as unproblematic. Population densities are low, and no significant amounts of damaged timber have been detected. Furthermore, no relevant hotspots of infestation have emerged. However, since tree vitality is limited during dry conditions, it is still important to continue monitoring the reproduction and infestation of relevant insects.
