The LWB is building new accommodation in Leipzig's Grünauer Allee by 2028. The apartments will provide space for around 200 refugees and will be built in series.

The Leipziger Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft mbH (LWB) is actively supporting the city of Leipzig in creating necessary accommodation for refugees. Due to the ongoing refugee movements worldwide and the constant strain on existing capacities, the LWB Supervisory Board has decided to build a new shared accommodation facility at Grünauer Allee 84 by 2028. The building, which will be leased from the City of Leipzig on a long-term basis after completion, will be built on undeveloped land.

The serial construction method will significantly shorten the construction phases and make them more effective. Around 40 apartments with space for around 200 people are planned. The estimated project costs amount to twelve million euros. The plans were approved by the LWB Supervisory Board on March 27, 2025, and work is now underway on the tenders. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with completion in spring 2028.

In the long term, the apartments will be available to the general housing market when they are no longer needed as shared accommodation. The City of Leipzig will outsource the tasks of management, social support and security to external service providers. The operator's contact details will be published on www.leipzig.de/gefluechtete.

The city of Leipzig is planning to inform the Leipzig-West district advisory council about the construction projects at Grünauer Allee 84 and Plovdiver Straße 52 on May 5. The latter accommodation is also being built by the LWB.

Many people around the world continue to flee from war and crisis zones and seek refuge in Germany. The capacity of existing shared accommodation is limited, which is why temporary accommodation is being provided in short-term emergency shelters. The social welfare office is also looking for suitable houses and spaces throughout the city to replace them in the long term.
