Köpping: "Treatment quality at university level"

Chemnitz Hospital is one of the maximum care providers in Saxony alongside the university hospitals in Dresden and Leipzig. "People between Vogtland and Central Saxony will now benefit from university-level treatment quality," explained Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) with regard to the new heart center. The state has contributed around 47.3 million euros to the project.

"With the new Cardiology Centre, we are giving people in south-west Saxony the security of being treated quickly and at the highest medical level in an emergency," emphasized Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). "Short distances, state-of-the-art technology and a strong location in Chemnitz create trust - and save lives."

Increase in cardiovascular diseases expected

According to the Federal Statistical Office, cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in Germany - even ahead of cancer. They were identified as the cause of death in more than 339,000 cases, with around 1.01 million deaths in 2024. Due to the ageing population, experts expect an increase in these diseases.

Chemnitz Hospital is a municipal hospital owned by the city. According to its own information, several thousand heart patients receive inpatient and outpatient care there every year. In total, the hospital treats around 61,700 inpatients and day-case patients and around 75,000 outpatients every year.
