The flu epidemic in Saxony is losing momentum: the number of influenza cases recently fell by 48 percent. Children and the elderly are still particularly affected.

This year's flu epidemic is not yet over in Saxony, but it is clearly flattening out. The number of reported influenza cases last week was 48 percent lower than the previous week, according to the weekly report from the State Investigation Institute (LUA) in Chemnitz. The winter vacations in particular contributed to the decline.

All age groups continued to fall ill with influenza, especially young children, primary school children and older adults. Since the start of the flu season at the end of September, 171 people with a confirmed case of influenza have died.

RSV and coronaviruses are also circulating

Epidemiologists have recently recorded an eight percent increase in the number of cases of another pathogen - the RSV virus. The illnesses mainly affect small children, but also older adults. So far, 10 RSV deaths have been reported in Saxony.

Corona is currently playing less of a role in respiratory diseases, according to the experts. The number of cases fell by 39 percent. The infections mostly affected adults and senior citizens. In the current season, 138 Covid-19 deaths have been recorded.
