Fever, aching limbs, runny nose - it's not just school classes, children's facilities, offices and authorities that are emptying. The flu is still on the rise.

The flu epidemic continues in Saxony. In the fourth calendar week of 2024, cases of influenza in particular were again registered, with the number of reported cases almost double that of the previous week at 3015, according to the latest report published by the State Investigation Institute (LUA) on Friday. According to the report, there were outbreaks in schools, medical facilities and daycare centers in various regions where the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV - a respiratory disease) "appears to play a role".

The number of deaths reported in connection with a Sars-CoV-2 infection since the start of the flu season in October 2023 rose by eight to a total of 281. People between the ages of 39 and 99 were affected.

In addition, there were four more people who died as a result of influenza. This brought the total number to 14 - five women and nine men between the ages of 30 and 86.

According to the LUA, influenza illnesses occur equally in all age groups, with comparatively fewer cases registered in adolescents and young adults. RSV infections, which mainly affect infants and young children, have also increased again, by 16 percent.

Reports of SARS-CoV cases, especially among older people, have fallen by almost a quarter, according to the data. According to the LUA, over 24,700 coronavirus cases have been reported since the start of the 2023/24 flu season - as well as more than 7,800 cases of influenza and over 3,300 cases of RSV.
