A youth hostel with a lake view—it’s now open in Markkleeberg, near Leipzig. What the new facility has to offer and how youth hostels are preparing for the future.

After two and a half years of construction, a new youth hostel on Lake Markkleeberg near Leipzig is opening its doors to visitors. The 170-bed facility is intended to give guests a closer look at the former mining region, explained Susan Graf, chairwoman of the Saxony State Association of Youth Hostels. The construction was funded by money allocated for the coal phase-out. The opening comes at a time when youth hostels across Germany are feeling the effects of travelers cutting back on travel expenses.

According to the city of Markkleeberg, the investment costs totaled approximately 17 million euros. Of that amount, 15.9 million euros came from funds under the Coal Regions Investment Act and from the Free State of Saxony. The Youth Hostel Association is leasing the property on a long-term basis and operates the facility. It is located directly on Lake Markkleeberg, a flooded open-pit mine pit.

Higher cost of living is changing travel behavior

Youth hostels across Germany saw a decline in overnight stays last year. The number fell by 2.8 percent to 8.8 million. The explanation given was that the effects of austerity measures were being felt particularly by families.

In contrast, youth hostels in Saxony reported an increase. 368,200 overnight stays represented a 1.9 percent increase compared to 2024. According to the state association, this was due in part to renovations at individual youth hostels as well as new “experience-oriented” offerings.

So far this year, the number of overnight stays remains below last year’s level, spokesperson Lisa Bachmann reported. “However, important booking periods are still ahead, including the fall break, the Advent season, and the New Year. We expect numerous last-minute bookings here, especially from families and individual guests.”

Economic uncertainty and rising living costs are having an impact on travel behavior. “Families and groups alike are paying closer attention to costs and weighing more carefully where they spend their money. We’re seeing that people are tending to cut back on additional trips—such as those during the off-season—and that families are focusing more on their main vacation,” Bachmann explained.

At the same time, costs for youth hostels are also rising, particularly for energy and wages. A price increase in 2026 was therefore unavoidable.

Declining student enrollment affects youth hostels

School classes and groups attending training courses and conferences make up well over half of the guests at Saxony’s youth hostels. For this reason, the foreseeable decline in student enrollment in Saxony and the neighboring eastern states will also affect youth hostels.

“The price-performance ratio is playing an increasingly important role, especially for school trips,” explained the spokesperson. They are trying to respond to this with flexible packages: lodging and meals are offered as the basic package, and additional activities can be booked on top of that.

In addition, the youth hostels aim to be “extracurricular learning venues” by offering programs on topics relevant to the curriculum. “We see further potential in sports and music groups, conferences and seminars, as well as in the area of vacation camps,” Bachmann explained.
