Firefighters are battling a fire on the railroad line south of Berlin. There is a closure - with consequences for long-distance travelers in several federal states.

There are restrictions on the Berlin-Leipzig railroad line due to an embankment fire. In Brandenburg, the line between Jüterbog and Ludwigsfelde is currently closed due to the fire, Deutsche Bahn announced on its website. An ICE train to Hamburg had to stop in Trebbin south of Berlin and return to Leipzig, a spokeswoman said. Previously, "Bild" had reported.

Long-distance trains are being rerouted, according to Deutsche Bahn. There may be occasional train or stop cancellations, the railroad spokeswoman said. The following long-distance services are affected:

  • ICE trains between Berlin and Halle(S)/Leipzig
  • ICE Sprinter trains between Berlin and Erfurt
  • Some IC trains between Berlin and Riesa/Dresden.

"The fire-fighting work is underway"

The fire department has been on a large-scale operation since the afternoon. According to the railroad company, the fire was caused by a hot axle on a freight train. "The extinguishing work is underway. However, we are currently unable to estimate the time required for the extinguishing work or the damage caused by the fire," said the railroad spokeswoman. "We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers."

A spokesperson for the regional fire department control center said that 65 firefighters were deployed between Thyrow and Trebbin. Flames could be seen and there was a lot of smoke. The fire department's top priority was to prevent the fire from spreading into the forest near Trebbin. The regional control center could not say exactly where the fire broke out.
