June 24 traditionally marks the end of the German asparagus season. Due to the cool temperatures of the past few days, farmers in Saxony are harvesting a little longer.

The mixed weather over the past few days is extending the asparagus season in Saxony. “The relatively cool week has slowed asparagus growth somewhat,” says René Heidig of the Nieschütz Asparagus Farm in the Elbe Valley. Heidig represents Saxony on the board of the Association of East German Asparagus and Berry Growers (Vosba). Farmers in Saxony are expected to be able to harvest not only until St. John’s Day on June 24 this year, but also for a few days beyond that.

“It’s also nice for customers to be able to buy fresh, local vegetables until the end of June,” says Heidig. He also plans to keep his farm stand open until the end of the month. The asparagus has grown evenly this season; he is satisfied with its quality and flavor.

The season began with night frosts and daytime temperatures around 20 degrees. “That wasn’t easy at first,” Heidig explained. After that, the weather remained consistent. Using white and black plastic sheeting, they were able to maintain a consistent temperature in the beds, allowing the asparagus to grow evenly throughout the season. “The weather really worked in our favor.” The asparagus farmers were able to offer fresh asparagus consistently throughout the season.

Asparagus farming is manual labor

However, high labor and energy costs are a cause for concern among asparagus farmers. The increase in the minimum wage has also driven up the costs for harvest workers. Asparagus farming requires a lot of manual labor: “We can’t automate any further,” said Heidig. The industry is therefore reliant on seasonal workers. “If labor costs rise, asparagus will also have to become a bit more expensive.”

According to experts, prices for German asparagus are rising again shortly before the end of the season. Depending on the grade, consumers paid between 4.06 euros and 6.29 euros for 500 grams of German white asparagus in supermarkets at the end of last week, according to the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft.

The Free State of Saxony is one of Germany’s smallest growing regions. According to the State Statistical Office, 25 farms in Saxony grow this sought-after delicacy. The cultivation area was most recently around 116 hectares. It has been steadily declining in recent years; in 2016, it was still around 300 hectares.
