Smaller Cherry Harvest in Saxony

In 2026, fruit growers in Saxony harvested fewer cherries than last year. About 2,000 metric tons of sweet and sour cherries were harvested this year—just under 23 percent less than in 2025, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Last year, the figure was just under 2,600 metric tons. According to the data, 250 metric tons (about 33 percent) fewer sweet cherries were harvested, and over 300 metric tons (18 percent) fewer sour cherries.

Nationwide, farms harvested 48,500 metric tons of sweet and sour cherries. This was 7.8 percent more than the ten-year average and 3.0 percent more than the already high-yielding previous year. The increase was due solely to sweet cherries. At 38,900 metric tons, the nationwide sweet cherry harvest was 16.2 percent above the long-term average. The sour cherry harvest, on the other hand, was significantly lower: At 9,600 metric tons, it was 16.8 percent below the average for the years 2016 through 2025.
