Tens of thousands of runners, traffic at a standstill: On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the 17th REWE Team Challenge will transform downtown Dresden into a massive running course. On Wednesday, a sporting highlight will clash with construction-related frustration in Dresden: the 17th REWE Team Challenge. Because the race route happens to run right through major construction sites in the city center, traffic around the main train station is likely to come to a complete standstill. Here’s what you need to know about road closures, buses, and trains.

Dresden. In Dresden, the 17th REWE Team Challenge on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, will result in extensive road closures in the Alt- and Seevorstadt districts. Since the race route runs directly through the already critical construction site at the dilapidated Budapest Bridge, drivers and passengers should expect major disruptions. The first closures for setting up this major sporting event will begin as early as Tuesday.

Setup begins at Postplatz: First closures starting Tuesday

The first restrictions for setting up the starting area on Annenstraße will take effect on Tuesday, June 16. Marienstraße will be completely closed to vehicle traffic between house number 13 and Postplatz. At the same time, the city will close Annenstraße between Hertha-Lindner-Straße and Marienstraße. Both sections will remain closed to private vehicles until late Wednesday evening.

Tunnel and Main Road Closures During Rush Hour

On the actual day of the event, June 17, the traffic restrictions will expand drastically. From 8 a.m. until midnight, Blüherstraße and Lingnerallee in the vicinity of the finish line at the stadium will be completely closed. Starting at 2:30 p.m., the most intense phase will occur during rush hour: The entire Annenstraße will be closed, and both tunnel tubes at Wiener Platz under the main train station will be completely closed until approximately 10:30 p.m.

In addition, there will be half-lane closures on Wiener Straße and Ammonstraße between Gellertstraße and Annenstraße. The section of Blüherstraße between Lennéplatz and Gret-Palucca-Straße is also affected. Starting at 4:00 p.m., the heavily trafficked Lennéstraße between Straßburger Platz and Lennéplatz will also be partially closed to traffic.

Situation exacerbated by bottleneck on Budapester Straße

The biggest logistical problem on race day is the combination with the ongoing emergency safety measures on the Budapester Bridge. Since Ammonstraße in the immediate vicinity of the bridge is already narrowed due to construction work there, the additional route for the race will lead to extreme congestion at the intersections. The city administration forecasts significant traffic jams and congestion throughout the entire area around Reitbahnstraße.

Heavy-duty vehicles over 7.5 tons must use the signposted U33 detour. All other road users are strongly advised to avoid the entire area south of the Old Town or to plan for significantly longer travel times.

Schedule changes and delays for buses and trains

The extensive road closures are also severely impacting public transit operated by Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB). The heavily used bus line 62 is particularly affected; due to previous damage to the Budapest Bridge is already on a detour and now has to use additional alternate routes due to the full closure of Annenstraße.

Due to the partial closure of Lennéstraße and Wiener Straße, tram lines 10 and 13 are also under pressure in the area between Straßburger Platz, Lennéplatz, and the main station. The DVB expects significant delays on these lines as well as on bus lines throughout the city center during the afternoon and evening hours. Since the actual closure times will be flexibly adjusted to accommodate the field of runners, the exact times on site may vary slightly at short notice.
