The first weekend was completely rained out, but now the tide is turning: a real heat wave with temperatures over 33 degrees is heading toward Dresden. For the brand-new wine market on the Altmarkt, this is an absolutely dream scenario, just in time for the second week. Organizer Joseph Nieke takes stock of the situation so far, despite the chaotic weather.

Dresden. Sun, clouds, rain, storms—the first weekend of the newly launched wine market on the Altmarkt had it all, weather-wise, except for a real summer day. Since last Thursday, winemakers and organizers have been battling changeable weather. And yet: as soon as the sun briefly came out, Dresdeners gathered at the stands, tasting red, rosé, and white wines from Germany and neighboring countries - and happily reaching for sparkling wine or Secco.

“Considering the first few days, which were quite challenging weather-wise, we and our winemakers are satisfied,” says organizer Joseph Nieke. The premiere is thus considered a success - albeit under difficult conditions.

Second week with summer weather: Up to 33 degrees expected

The good news for everyone who missed the first weekend: The weather forecast for the second week is significantly better. According to current forecasts, temperatures will climb to nearly 30 degrees by Thursday and even exceed 33 degrees on Friday - perfect conditions for an afternoon with a glass of wine at the Altmarkt.

The wine market is open until Sunday, June 21. Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on the final day from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. To clarify: The event is a wine market - that is, a market for tasting and discovering wines from Germany and other EU countries - and not a wine festival in the traditional sense, which typically celebrates the harvest of a particular vintage.
