Up to 60 million euros for the Leipzig Sports Forum

Leipzig will receive up to 60 million euros for the further development of the Sportforum. The site near the Red Bull Arena is set to become a central hub for competitive and elite sports as well as major national and international sporting events, according to a statement from the city. The plan is to build a state-of-the-art, supraregional indoor sports complex that will also serve recreational sports.

Investment as part of the Olympic bid

Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) and Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). According to Kretschmer, one of the reasons for the investment is the bid for the Olympic Games. “Should the ‘Berlin+’ bid be successful, Leipzig could play an important role in the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Games,” said the Minister President. The investment is intended for the long term. “It will happen in any case and will further advance this wonderful sports destination rich in tradition.”

The project improves conditions for sports and, at the same time, creates the conditions to bring more major sporting events to Leipzig, said Jung. “The Free State’s support of up to 60 million euros gives us the necessary backing for this important project for the future—and also for the Olympic bid together with Berlin.”

Here’s what’s planned

Specifically, the development plan calls for a complete renovation of the Quarterback Immobilien Arena and an expansion of its seating capacity to approximately 12,000 seats. A new ball sports arena for up to 5,000 visitors will be added, which is set to become the home venue for the handball teams of SC DHfK and HC Leipzig. The city anticipates synergy effects with the Olympic Training Center, the Institute for Applied Training Science, and local clubs due to their geographical proximity. 

Track and field will also benefit from the modernization: it guarantees the long-term preservation of the hydraulically adjustable track and field facility with its specialized surface. The arena’s auxiliary halls will be expanded to accommodate the important national fencing training center and the Leipzig Fencing Club.
