About a month after their birth, three young corsacs are gradually exploring their enclosure. The offspring bring special joy to the zoo.

Fluffy offspring at Chemnitz Zoo: visitors can watch little corsaks, also known as steppe foxes, on their first exploratory tours. The three cubs have been developing very well since their birth on April 1, as the zoo announced. For a few days now, they have been leaving their shelter more and more often and curiously exploring their enclosure.

The parents are taking care of the rearing together. In the first few weeks, the young are suckled, but begin to eat solid food after about a month. At around four to five months, they are finally fully grown.

Corsac adapted to extreme weather conditions in steppes

The corsac is said to be perfectly adapted to the steppes and semi-deserts of Central Asia. Thanks to its thick fur, it can withstand the extreme weather conditions and cold.

The breeding season is usually between January and March, but can be slightly delayed in zoos. After a gestation period of around seven to eight weeks, several cubs are usually born - usually between two and eleven. At birth, they are still very small and only weigh around 50 to 80 grams.

The female corsac has been living in Chemnitz since August 2025. The zoo was particularly pleased about the offspring, as it initially seemed as if the pair still needed some time to get to know each other.
