More space and new views. The Dresden Zoo is providing its giraffes and zebras with more space. The expansion of the enclosure was funded entirely by donations.

At the Dresden Zoo, the largest residents will soon be able to stretch their long necks in a larger enclosure. Shortly before “World Giraffe Day” (June 21), the expanded giraffe and zebra enclosure was inaugurated—after about four months of construction. The zoo announced that the enclosure not only provides significantly more space for the three Kordofan giraffes—Diko, Tessa, and Gaia—as well as the four Chapman’s zebras, but also benefits visitors by offering new perspectives on the animals.

“We are particularly proud of this project because it was financed entirely by donations and demonstrates the public’s connection to our zoo,” explained Zoo Director Karl-Heinz Ukena. A total of 500,000 euros was raised—half from the Dresden Zoo Friends Association and half from individual donors. Construction began in February 2026 and included not only the demolition of the former terrarium but also a comprehensive redesign of the area. The zebras now have a new shelter and can stay outside almost around the clock.

“In addition, two sand pits and a heated water trough—which keeps the water fresh and flowing even during the cold months—provide the animals with greater comfort. With this expansion, Dresden Zoo is sustainably improving the living conditions for its animals,” the statement said. The giraffes and zebras now have approximately 2,800 square meters at their disposal—about one-third more space than before. The additional space creates new opportunities for the animals to move around and increases the structural diversity of the enclosure.

This Sunday marks “World Giraffe Day”—the longest day of the year for the animals with the longest necks. The day is intended to raise awareness of the threats facing giraffes in the wild.
