National player David Raum sees the recent international matches against France and the Netherlands as the initial spark for a successful home European Championship. "Something has been created," the RB Leipzig defender told Kicker. "I've been involved for two years now, but the tournament dynamics and team spirit were unique during this course. It gives you a really good feeling heading into the European Championship."
Raum was left out of the 2-0 win in Lyon, but played the last eleven minutes in the 2-1 win in Frankfurt. Maximilian Mittelstädt from VfB Stuttgart is currently set as left-back in the DFB team, while Raum is designated as back-up by the national coach. "Julian Nagelsmann has clearly shown me that I can be important for the structure of the team as a physical mentality player. I accepted this role and accepted it well, that's what I was told," said the 25-year-old.
Raum accepts his status as number two on the left side of defense. "Over the years, I've learned that it's important in soccer to accept your role and stick to it," said Raum. It could also go the other way very quickly. This season, Raum has matured into an undisputed regular and leading player in Leipzig. With nine assists, he is one of the top ten players in the Bundesliga.
