Bundesliga handball club SC Magdeburg has won its first home game of the new season. The friendly eastern duel against ThSV Eisenach was won 34:28 (17:10) in front of 6,600 spectators. Magdeburg's top scorer was Omar Ingi Magnusson with eight goals, while Max Beneke scored the most for Eisenach with ten.
Before the game, there was a minute's silence for Harry Jahns, who died at the weekend and won numerous titles for SCM as a player and youth coach. Magdeburg started better, consistently punished Eisenach's mistakes and led by four goals (7:3/11th). Eisenach's Head Coach Sebastian Hinze called his first timeout, after which Beneke kept the Thuringians in the game from the backcourt. Nevertheless, the home side led by a clear margin at the break.
Only a brief rally by Eisenach
Eisenach came out of the break a little better and reduced the deficit minimally (20:14/36). SCM's Head Coach Bennet Wiegert used goalkeeper Matej Mandic for longer stretches for the first time, no doubt also in view of the difficult tasks ahead in Berlin and against Paris.
Magdeburg regained its composure, however, and restored the gap at the break (25:18/43). When Magdeburg eased off a little, Eisenach made the score a little friendlier, but that was as good as it got. Magdeburg face champions Berlin on Saturday (15:40/Dyn and RBB), while Eisenach host Melsungen on Sunday (16:30/Dyn).
