Dominantly superior, but still only one point: RB Leipzig suffered another setback against a relegation candidate in their fight to return to the Champions League. At the end of the 22nd matchday of the Bundesliga, the Saxons only managed a 2:2 (0:0) draw against VfL Wolfsburg.
In front of 35,787 fans, Mohamed Amoura (52nd) and Mattias Svanberg (78th) gave VfL the lead, while Yan Diomande (70th) and Brajan Gruda (89th) equalized. Leipzig are now fifth, while Wolfsburg remain in 15th place.
Leipzig's supervisory board chairman Oliver Mintzlaff announced qualification for the top flight as a new goal for the season after the cup defeat in Munich on Wednesday. If this is to be achieved, points must be scored against teams from the bottom third of the table. However, Leipzig had already failed to score against FC St. Pauli (1:1) and Mainz (1:2).
Werner as dad in the USA
A good quarter of an hour before kick-off, Leipzig passed 113 goals. That's how many times record signing Timo Werner has scored in his 216 competitive games for RB, and now he's off to San José in the US MLS league. His long-time companion Mintzlaff greeted him via video message: "I am convinced that the move to the MLS is the right one. Your career is not over yet."
Werner gratefully accepted the words with a woolly hat and down jacket - and then broke with his plan. "I didn't really want to say anything, as I'm not a man of big words," said the former international. "But for the occasion: my daughter was born on Wednesday and I don't think she could be prouder." Werner will start his US adventure on February 22 against Kansas City.
Gruda misses big chance
One of his successors set the tone offensively in Leipzig's game, but was initially less accurate. Conrad Harder's volley (5th) from Gruda's free-kick went wide of the goal, while his unmarked overhead kick from five meters was straight at Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara. After just over half an hour, Peter Gulacsi (28) had to leave the Leipzig goal injured and Marten Vandevoordt came into the game.
Leipzig continued to dominate the game almost at will, while Wolfsburg's relegation battle and four consecutive games without a win were clear to see. The visitors clearly had the greatest respect for Yan Diomande. The shooting star of the Bundesliga season was at times harried by three opponents. The Ivorian nevertheless managed a dangerous cross after 32 minutes, but Willi Orban's header went just wide of the far post.
Gruda had the best chance before the break. The Brighton loanee (41) was played clear by Antonio Nusa and broke into the penalty area on his own - only to shoot at Grabara. Wolfsburg had the luck defensively that Leipzig lacked up front.
Amoura shocks Leipzig
And Wolfsburg? Scored completely out of nowhere. Adam Daghim dribbled through several Leipzig players on the right and found the free Amoura in the penalty area. The Algerian international's shot landed unstoppably in the corner. It was Wolfsburg's first shot on RB's goal. Quite a problem for Leipzig, as RB have never scored after falling behind this season.
Coach Ole Werner brought on striker Romulo and right-back Ridle Baku to turn things around. However, Grabara was largely responsible for the equalizer. A goalkeeper's clearance went completely wrong and ended up directly with Gruda. He fed Diomande in the penalty area - 1:1. Leipzig now pressed and promptly conceded the next goal. Substitute Svanberg scored after Leipzig had lost the ball in the build-up. Leipzig struck back shortly before the end: Gruda flicked the ball beautifully into the corner to score for RB for the first time.
