For many young people, alcohol is part and parcel of parties, discos and leisure activities. Health experts are countering this with prevention campaigns. Does that help?

In Saxony, fewer children and adolescents were treated in hospitals for alcohol poisoning last year than in 2022, according to the health insurance company DAK, based on surveys by the Federal Statistical Office. According to the survey, the number of young binge drinkers admitted to hospitals fell by ten percent to 884. This is also the lowest figure since 2019. Children and young people aged 10 to 19 were recorded.

In 2023, 487 boys and 397 girls were treated in hospital after alcohol abuse, DAK reported. The number of males affected fell by 70 (minus 13 percent) compared to the previous year. The decline in the number of girls was less pronounced - it amounted to 7 percent.

The health insurance company also saw the lower figures as a success of prevention campaigns. In January, the "colorful instead of blue" campaign will be launched again to contribute to a change in drinking behavior among young people. The campaign, in which schoolchildren design posters on the topic of binge drinking, will then enter its 16th year.
