Some already see the project in the same league as major construction disasters such as Berlin's BER airport: the planned prison in Zwickau. Saxony, together with Thuringia, has a problem construction site there.

The Saxon state parliament will debate the massive problems with the construction of the large prison in Zwickau on Thursday (from 10.00 a.m.). The prison is being built jointly with Thuringia. The costs have exploded and the schedule is completely out of control. Thuringia had announced its intention to renegotiate the corresponding state treaty with Saxony.

The new two-state prison for up to 820 inmates was originally due to open in 2019. The originally planned costs of 150 million euros have now more than doubled. At present, the state of Saxony, as the client, has not given an opening date or an exact cost forecast. Recently, there has also been talk that some of the technical facilities and individual components may have to be dismantled due to defects. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) therefore put the issue on the state parliament's topical hour.

Further debates concern the skilled trades in the Free State and the situation of the fire departments. The state government will be questioned on the topics of culture and tourism. Motions in parliament concern wind turbines in the state and a ban on cell phones in elementary school, among other things.
