Dining in Faro: Wine and Light Bites in the Evening

Wine glasses

Faro is a great place to go out: At a new vinhos-and-petiscos bar in the old town, you can enjoy wine by the glass, petiscos, and lively conversation late into the night.

For most travelers to the Algarve, Faro is the starting and ending point of their vacation—because there’s an airport there. But they don’t just have one airport there! So it’s definitely worth making Faro and/or the island just off its coast (which is actually just a peninsula: Península do Ancão—but nobody calls it that…) your vacation destination for a while. No sooner said than done—and I don’t regret it.

There are so many places to go out in Faro that you could go out morning, noon, and night for days on end without ever repeating yourself. That’s where it helps to know locals who understand your preferences and can give you tips (obrigado, Sara). But it’s not just about friends—there are also recommendations from friendly receptionists that shouldn’t be overlooked, and true to the motto “the proof is in the pudding,” you can discover exciting things that way, too. And last but not least, you can of course just stroll through the streets and pop into wherever catches your eye—that usually works out just fine, too!

If you’re staying at a hotel in Faro’s Old Town, you should definitely take advantage of it—and since the clock for going out and dining runs differently in Portugal than in Germany anyway, it’s still worth it even after 10 p.m. So—after taking a first look at my own photos at photo exhibition at Jardim Manuel Bíva)—a short stroll up and down Rua Conselheiro Bivar , where, fortunately, all the nice spots were taken, so a peek into the side street with the two arches seemed interesting. And lo and behold: luck must be on the stroller’s side, because Social. Vinhos & Petiscos had opened there just a good fourteen days earlier. Brand-new and already packed, but with a free table inside for one person: perfect!

Wines and small bites—that sounds good. I also liked that the wines (not exclusively, but mostly) were served by the glass from magnum bottles. The fact that the service was lively and friendly—and the staff were chatty—rounded out the experience—we struck up a conversation, and even the German-British quartet doing a wine tasting at the next table joined in: wine brings people together, as they say. They were already nearing the end of their wine tasting and had obviously made the most of it, so I had to hurry to catch up a bit…

To start, we had 2019 Diálogo (€7.80 per glass), an uncomplicated red wine cuvée from the Douro Valley by Niepoort. Served from a magnum, which—much like the Fabelhaft popular here—features illustrations by Luís Afonso. If I understand correctly, these are all the Diálogo labels dating back to the very first release. Once the magnum is in hand, the server goes from table to table and then returns with the empty bottle surprisingly quickly (a great opportunity for a photo session!). This simple wine pairs well with the bread (€1.50) and the platter of cheese and ham (€8.50): nothing to make you think or philosophize, but perfect for a light snack and casual conversation—even with the table next door.

Since the Diálogo had been finished and the restaurant was still packed both inside and out, the server had prudently secured a slightly larger bottle for the next round: a Jeroboam, or five liters. The bottle was heavy, but the wine—a 2023 Jose Piteira from the Alentejo (€5.00 per glass)—wasn’t a heavyweight; rather, (by now, just before midnight) it was a very drinkable nightcap. Or so I thought. But since the nice folks at the next table wanted another shot (which wasn’t available here at Vinhos & Petiscos—but the server got them what they wanted from the place next door!) and we were having such a nice chat, I had them bring me another port. “May I bring you a really good one?” the server asked with a wink. What a question! She then brought the Borges Vintage 2018 (€10.50), and that really was a fine way to wind down for the night…
