Around 20 Vietnamese pheasants from European zoos have been brought to Vietnam. They are to be reintroduced there. How Chemnitz Zoo is involved.

Around 20 Vietnamese pheasants from zoos in Germany and other European countries are to contribute to the reintroduction of the species, which is believed to be extinct in the wild worldwide, in Vietnam. Among the selected animals is one from Chemnitz Zoo, as the city announced.

The animals were collected in Berlin and flown to Vietnam in special transport crates on Monday. The critically endangered pheasants have been kept at Chemnitz Zoo since 2013. The rare chicken birds have been successfully bred since 2015.

The Vietnamese pheasant (Lophura edwardsi) is said to be "extinct in the wild". The reintroduction, which has now been accompanied, represents an important step for the protection of the Vietnamese pheasant, the zoo added.
