When it's hot, people should "lend a helping hand" to wild birds in the city. These days, sparrows and other birds can hardly find any outdoor water sources. A birdbath can help them cool off.

Wild birds rely on human assistance on hot days. “They need significantly more water on hot days. However, water is scarce in parks, gardens, and the open countryside,” reported the State Foundation for Nature and the Environment. Young birds and smaller species are particularly affected. Water is needed not only for hydration but also for cooling and personal hygiene.

State Foundation Seeks Support

“By setting up a water dish in the garden or even on a balcony, anyone can relatively easily help our feathered friends get through hot days,” the State Foundation said in its appeal for support. Even a shallow bowl or a flowerpot saucer filled with fresh water is ideal for this purpose.

The water should be changed daily if possible

According to the foundation, the containers should have flat edges and a slightly rough surface. A depth of two to ten centimeters is recommended. “Ideally, a stone should be placed in the center of the container to serve as an island.
It is essential to ensure that the water in the drinking trough is changed once or twice a day. Otherwise, there is a risk that the water trough will become a source of infection.” The water troughs should be positioned in easily visible and easily accessible locations. Placement near hedges, bushes, and trees is recommended.

Unlike mammals, wild birds are unable to sweat, the state foundation explained. “Nor can they shed their plumage. They can only release excess heat through unfeathered parts of their bodies, such as their legs and beaks. They often try to cool themselves by panting. But this mechanism has its limits.”!
