The Saxon Greens want to protect animal shelters in the state from cuts to state subsidies in the future too. "Animal welfare is a state objective and has no place on a list of cuts," explained Franziska Schubert, leader of the Greens' parliamentary group in the state parliament. She is pleased that a significant increase was achieved in the negotiations for the 2025/2026 double budget and now hopes that the upcoming draft budget will not be confronted with such severe cuts again.
The previous week, the state parliament had passed the double budget with the votes of the CDU, SPD, Greens and Left Party. This was preceded by an agreement between the CDU-SPD minority coalition with the Greens and the Left. Under pressure from the Greens, it was also decided to triple the funding for animal shelters compared to the government's draft. An annual €1.5 million is now planned for animal shelters and €500,000 for animal welfare organizations.
