The four Saxon geoparks offer a glimpse into the Earth's history. Geopark guides bring this history to life for visitors.

Saxony has now trained new specialized staff for two of its four geoparks. The twelve certified park guides will be working in the Saxony Central and Porphyrland geoparks, according to the State Foundation for Nature and the Environment. Since November 2025, they have been trained to present the nature and landscape of their parks in an engaging way and to facilitate nature experiences.

Knowledge of geology was a key focus of the training. They are also expected to incorporate regional history and culture into their guided tours.

Geoparks highlight geological features

Geoparks are regions where geological features, in particular, are well-preserved and made accessible to visitors. They offer insights into Earth’s history, nature, and culture, as well as the geological formation of the respective landscape. The focus is on sharing knowledge.

There are four geoparks in Saxony: The Central Saxony Geopark extends across parts of the districts of Saxon Switzerland–Eastern Ore Mountains and Central Saxony. The Porphyrland Geopark is located east and southeast of Leipzig between Brandis, Wechselburg, and Mügeln. The Vogtland Geo-Environmental Park and the Muskauer Faltenbogen Geopark in eastern Saxony round out the quartet.
