What happens after the fuel discount expires? Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs believes that commuters and SMEs will be particularly affected - and calls on the federal government to take action.

In view of the imminent end of the fuel discount, Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Panter is calling for a follow-up solution for commuters and companies. "The temporary reduction in energy tax was the right thing to do," said the SPD politician. Especially in a large state like Saxony, this is extremely important for people who rely on their car every day. Now the question is: "How do we prevent the burdens from simply returning?"

Panter believes the federal government has a duty. "Anyone who drives to work every day, who works in the skilled trades or transports goods as a medium-sized business needs continued reliability". An extension must therefore be "seriously considered", said Panter.

Fuel taxes have been reduced by 16.7 cents per liter since the beginning of May and will remain so until the end of June in order to relieve the burden of the sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices as a result of the war in Iran. The government is likely to lose up to 1.6 billion euros in taxes as a result of the law passed by the black-red coalition. According to a recently introduced rule, petrol stations are only allowed to increase prices once a day, at 12.00 noon. Reductions are always possible.
