Vacation start here, vacation end there: for several reasons, patience is likely to be required on German freeways at the weekend. Travelers should also make sure they have the right equipment.

Drivers should allow more time for their journeys at the weekend. Due to the start of the vacations in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, the ADAC expects a lot of traffic on the freeways and main roads in the direction of the Alps - but also delays in the opposite direction due to the end of the vacations in Saarland and Saxony. In addition, the vacations also ended in parts of the Netherlands.

According to the ADAC, the most affected freeways include virtually all major German routes towards the Alps, for example freeways 5, 7, 8, 93 and 95, but traffic jams and delays are also expected on other major freeways such as the A1, A3 and A6 at the weekend.

It may also take longer in Austria

On the way to the winter vacations and on the return journey, however, the risk of traffic jams in Austria is not averted. According to the report, the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner highways in particular may be full at the weekend. On the latter, there is an additional bottleneck with the Lueg Bridge, which is currently usually only accessible in one lane. There is also likely to be a lot of traffic on the Tyrolean long-distance pass route.

According to the ADAC, anyone traveling in the Alps should also be prepared for sudden changes in the weather with snow and ice. In Austria, winter tires have also been mandatory in appropriate road conditions since November. Depending on the signs, snow chains may also be mandatory on some roads. According to the ADAC, violations can result in a fine of up to 5,000 euros.
