A weight limit of 7.5 tons currently applies to the only Elbe crossing in the area. This could change soon. Experts are also clarifying whether refurbishment is sufficient instead of a new construction.

The condition of the Elbe bridge in Bad Schandau, which has been closed for months, is better than expected. The results of all measurements and calculations to date show that the structure has sufficient reserves beyond the current permissible load of 7.5 tons, said Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU) according to a press release.

Even if there are further fractures in the prestressing steel used, the bridge can still be used for at least another year. "I am particularly relieved about this expert opinion. Because it gives us enough time to build a temporary bridge if necessary," said Kraushaar.

Further investigations will now show whether the load limit for traffic on the bridge can be increased. The experts will also examine whether - as previously assumed - a new replacement is necessary or whether renovation will suffice. This decision will also determine whether a temporary bridge needs to be built.

Bridge was fully closed for months

From November 2024, the Bad Schandau Elbe Bridge, near the border with the Czech Republic, was closed for months after cracks were found during a special inspection. This led to traffic problems because people had to take a long detour. Following load tests, the bridge was reopened in April for cars and trucks up to 7.5 tons as well as cyclists and pedestrians. Heavy goods vehicles still have to use the detours.

Like the collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden, the bridge in Bad Schandau is made of Hennigsdorf prestressing steel. It is therefore at risk of so-called stress corrosion cracking, which is said to have caused the collapse in Dresden.
