Storms and hail caused less damage to vehicles in Saxony last year. Nevertheless, insurers warn that a single storm could change everything.

Storms caused around 23 million euros worth of damage to vehicles in Saxony last year. This is shown by figures from the German Insurance Association (GDV). Storm, hail and lightning damaged around 6,000 vehicles in the state in 2025.

The number of claims fell compared to 2024. According to the GDV, this was due to a comparatively mild storm year. In 2024, storms had damaged around 10,000 cars and caused economic losses of around 32 million euros.

A severe storm can change the balance sheet

"On average, motor insurers paid out around 3,700 euros for every claim in Saxony," explained GDV Managing Director Jörg Asmussen. However, a calmer year does not mean the all-clear - individual storms could cause massive damage within a few hours.

The damage caused by storms in motor insurance has also fallen significantly across Germany. Last year, insurers paid out around 650 million euros to their customers. In 2024, they had still paid out 1.2 billion euros. However, the nationwide figures also include damage caused by flooding.

What those affected should do

After storm damage, those affected should inform the insurance company as quickly as possible and document the damage, for example with photos. In addition, consequential damage should be limited as far as possible, for example by stopping the ingress of water or provisionally securing damaged areas. Consumer advocates point this out.
