The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra has already played in Brazil several times, but never in the Amazon region. On World Environment Day, it has now traveled musically to the endangered natural paradise.

The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra has recommended itself as an ambassador for nature conservation. Their musical and photographic homage to the Amazon rainforest was enthusiastically received by the audience at the Kulturpalast on Friday - World Environment Day. Under the direction of Italian-Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes, the orchestra played a piece from "Bachianas Brasileiras" by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959), an excerpt from "Águas da Amazonia" by Philip Glass and, as a highlight, the symphonic oratorio "Floresta do Amazonas" by Villa-Lobos - combined with black and white photos by Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado (1944-2025).

Project to reforest destroyed rainforest

"We have destroyed the rainforest," the renowned photographer Salgado had repeatedly warned until his death in May a year ago: "If we destroy the balance in the rainforest, then we destroy the climatic balance on the planet." One solution to the major ecological crisis was to reforest the forests. The photographer and his wife campaigned for this. In 1998, they founded a project to turn deforested land around his parents' farm in south-eastern Brazil back into a species-rich primeval forest. As a result of their commitment, more than three million trees have already been planted and seven million square meters of forest have been created.

"Amazônia" combines two art forms with music and photography

The "Amazônia" project combines two art forms with music and photography. Conductor Menezes had created a suite for large orchestra and soprano from the work by Villa-Lobos. Her compatriot Camila Provenzalle took part as a soloist. Salgado himself had the idea of combining his photos with music and found a partner in Menezes. After the first performance in the Paris Philharmonie, the project has since been presented several times in European cities. In Dresden, it struck a chord with the audience. It thanked them with a great deal of applause and standing ovations.
