There is yet another strong indication of the success of Saxony’s lynx program. Alva, the female lynx released into the wild in the spring of 2024, has had her second litter, according to the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture, and Geology. Using wildlife cameras, researchers were able to confirm the presence of two cubs in July. The footage shows the young lynx playing and exploring their surroundings.
Months of preparation for release into the wild
On Monday, two lynx were also released into the wild. From now on, the female Lotta and the male Luca will roam the forests in the western part of the Free State. Since they are wearing transmitters, their whereabouts can be tracked for about a year. Both animals had spent the past few months at the Hützscheroda Wildcat Village, where they were prepared for release into the wild.
Lotta is a captive-bred lynx from the Oberrabenstein wildlife enclosure at the Chemnitz Zoo. The breeding pair there successfully gave birth to offspring for the fourth time this year, thereby contributing to the conservation of the species. Kuder Luca also comes from a captive-bred population, though from Belgium.
