Ever since the first details of the planned savings package in the healthcare sector became known, industry lobby groups have been up in arms - including in Saxony. They argue that patients will be worse off.

The savings package planned by the Federal Ministry of Health in the healthcare sector would deprive hospitals in Saxony of millions of euros, according to estimates by their umbrella organization. In 2027 alone, the Saxony Hospital Association estimates that hospitals will be missing out on around 409 million euros. This would have a significant impact on the future provision of medical care, warned the chairwoman of the association. There is a threat of service restrictions, waiting lists for patient treatment and staff reductions.

The clinics are already struggling with a widening funding gap in personnel costs, as tariff-related additional costs are not fully covered by the health insurance companies. From the association's point of view, the savings plans also come at an inopportune time because the clinics are preparing intensively for the hospital structure reform.

Left sees hospital funding in danger

The chairwoman and health policy spokeswoman of the Left parliamentary group, Susanne Schaper, criticized that the plans would systematically cut the clinics instead of providing solid funding. At the same time, rising personnel costs would no longer be fully covered. Smaller locations in rural areas in particular would be at risk if rising costs were no longer covered. This would threaten further closures. This would mean longer distances, less security of care and greater dependence on large hospital locations, especially in Saxony.

Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) had presented a draft for an austerity package that would reduce the burden on statutory health insurers by 19.6 billion euros in 2027. This would be more than the expected gap of 15 billion euros and is intended to prevent further increases in supplementary contributions. Among other things, there are plans to curb expenditure at surgeries, clinics and for the pharmaceutical industry - but also higher co-payments for medication and restrictions on non-contributory co-insurance for spouses.
