In Saxony, 342 people are currently waiting for a donor organ. This is according to the latest figures from the German Organ Transplantation Foundation (DSO). In the first five months of this year, 36 people donated organs after their death - four more than in the same period in 2025. This puts Saxony at 21.6 organ donors per million inhabitants and puts it in second place nationwide behind Hamburg (35.0). The average across Germany was 13.1.
Saxony, together with Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, is part of the DSO region East, which has been achieving above-average figures for years. "If as many organ donations were realized nationwide as in this region, the situation for waiting patients would be noticeably better," emphasized Axel Rahmel, Medical Director of the foundation, in January.
At the same time, between January and May of this year, the number of organs removed in Saxony fell to 91 organs (previous year: 96) and the number of organs transplanted fell to 64 (previous year: 76).
