Camping is booming nationwide. How much does Saxony benefit from this trend towards vacationing in a tent or motorhome?

Saxony has become a more popular destination for camping vacations in recent years. According to data from the State Statistical Office, the number of overnight stays at campsites in Saxony rose from just under 636,000 in 2015 to almost 1.1 million in 2025.

A little more than 100 campsites offer pitches

The number of campsites remained relatively constant. There were 104 facilities in 2015, compared to 107 last year. The statisticians only record campsites that offer at least ten pitches. In addition, there are around 150 sites in the state that are intended for motorhomes.

Camping season from April to October

Many campsites have just opened for the season. In Saxony, it usually runs from April to October. But they are also experimenting with winter camping. For example, the campsite on Lake Kulkwitz in Leipzig has been offering opportunities for this special form of camping for the first time since last November.

Master plan envisages expansion

Saxony's tourism officials want to promote camping vacations. In the tourism master plan, which the state launched after the severe cuts during the coronavirus crisis, camping and motorhome travel are identified as a growth area. The camping facilities and pitches should score points above all with high quality in order to attract additional holidaymakers.

Other regions with more campers

However, even if Saxony is becoming more popular with campers, the state is not exactly a hotspot for this type of tourism compared to other federal states. The proportion of overnight stays at campsites in Saxony to all overnight stays was recently just under 5.6 percent. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the figure for Germany as a whole was 9.0 percent in 2025.

Price analysis: camping in Saxony cheaper than the national average

According to a price analysis by the automobile club ADAC, Saxony is one of the states where camping is comparatively cheap. In the 2026 high season, a family with two adults and one child will have to pay an average of 39 euros per night. This is below the national average of 41 euros.
