New app recognizes nearly 10,000 animal sounds - even without an internet connection

Researchers from Chemnitz helped develop the new app, which can identify thousands of animal species by their calls - completely offline and in real time.

A walk in the woods, birds chirping from all sides, and no idea who’s singing right now. A new app developed in collaboration with researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology solves exactly this problem. "BirdNET Live" recognizes animal calls in real time - right on your smartphone and even in areas without cell service. The artificial intelligence runs entirely on the device.

Previous apps for identifying animal calls almost always required an internet connection. In dense forests or high mountains, this was often impossible. A team from Chemnitz University of Technology has solved this problem.

The app now acoustically recognizes nearly 10,000 animal species - more than any other app, says developer Dr. Stefan Kahl of Chemnitz University of Technology. According to the researchers, the second-best offline app recognizes only about 2,300 species. “BirdNET Live” identifies 8,927 bird species as well as hundreds of mammals, insects, and amphibians.

A tool for experts and laypeople

“BirdNET Live” is primarily aimed at nature conservation professionals, researchers, and students. Citizen scientists and amateur birdwatchers can also use it. It saves each recording - along with the location and time - directly to the smartphone. The recordings can then be replayed, reviewed, or shared with other experts. This makes the app a useful learning tool for better distinguishing animal calls.

The app is part of the “RangerSound” project, funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation. Conservation biologists from the University of Würzburg, the ranger team at the Bavarian Forest National Park, the company Oekofor from Freiburg, and AI experts from Chemnitz University of Technology collaborated on the project. When used with an external microphone, the smartphone can even remain safely in a backpack while the app continues to record animal sounds in the background.

A technological breakthrough

According to the researchers, behind this seemingly simple offline feature lies a highly optimized artificial intelligence system that operates directly on the smartphone for the first time. It was only through close collaboration between nature conservation, field practice, and AI development that this solution became possible.

Education stands to benefit as well. In the future, the app is intended not only to be used in classroom settings but also to facilitate research in Ecuador’s species-rich rainforest, where cell service is often unavailable.

The app is particularly useful for ranger teams in protected areas. They can simply let the app run in the background during their patrols and get an on-the-spot overview of which animal species are present in an Area - without any internet connectivity issues.
